Greetings

Professor ImafukuGreetings from the Professor Imafuku

The Department of Dermatology at the Faculty of Medicine, Fukuoka University, was established in 1972, the same year the Faculty of Medicine was added as a new faculty to Fukuoka University and Fukuoka University Hospital was opened. Following the founding Hospital Director, the late Professor Kentaro Higuchi (former Professor of Dermatology at Kyushu University), and the first Professor of the Department of Dermatology, Professor Shoji Toshitani, Professor Juichiro Nakayama served as the second professor from April 1998, and I assumed the position as a professor and chairman in April 2014.

The Dermatology Department at Fukuoka University is characterized by providing medical care for a wide range of skin diseases, from common to complex conditions, and treating a large number of patients. In terms of research, we focus on clinical research, investigating questions like “Why do these diseases occur?” Our studies aim to understand the essence of diseases through detailed clinical observation and examinations, and identify the most effective treatments.

We specialize in six key areas highlighted on our website:

Psoriasis

Since 1998, Fukuoka University Hospital has treated over 1,600 psoriasis patients. Around 500 patients are treated annually with a wide range of therapies, from traditional ultraviolet treatment to advanced biologics, tailored to disease severity. We also focus on treating psoriatic arthritis in collaboration with the Rheumatologic /Orthopedics Department. Research is conducted to continuously assess the outcomes and determine the most effective treatments for specific patients. Additionally, genetic testing for pustular psoriasis began in April 2021.

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis treatment has undergone significant changes since 2017, with options now including biologic injections, oral JAK inhibitors, and non-steroidal topical medications. We adopt these advanced therapies and conduct clinical trials for new treatments. Furthermore, we explore clinical and research questions, such as why severe cases are more common in men and the distinctions and similarities between erythroderma and atopic dermatitis.

Herpesvirus Infections

Our work on herpes simplex and herpes zoster includes not only treatment but also research into seroepidemiology and the use of PCR for accurate diagnoses, aiming to understand the disease mechanisms.

Neurofibromatosis Type I (von Recklinghausen Disease)

This hereditary disorder caused by abnormalities in the NF1 gene on chromosome 17 manifests with diverse severities despite being a single-gene disorder. Our department, as part of a research team under the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, conducts clinical studies on the disease’s characteristics and surgical methods. Genetic testing for this condition began in April 2021, taking approximately six months for results. For plexiform neurofibromas, the oral drug Selumetinib(Koselugo®) is available for patients.

Skin Malignancies

We provide diagnosis and treatment for basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma and other rare skin malignancies. Our services include sentinel lymph node biopsy, surgical recections, and the use of cutting-edge immunotherapy and molecularly targeted drugs.

Cosmetic Dermatology

Our department offers specialized outpatient services and laser treatments for vascular lesions and pigmented lesions. To objectively assess treatment outcomes, we have introduced new pigmentation measurement devices to enhance evaluation accuracy.

The Department of Dermatology at the Faculty of Medicine, Fukuoka University, strives to bring happiness to our patients through medical care and research. We aim to learn from our patients, return that knowledge as improved treatments, and train motivated doctors who can excel in this field. Our entire team is dedicated to achieving these goals.
